Course summary

"Economics is everywhere, and understanding economics can help you make better decisions and lead a happier life." - Tyler Cowen Economics is the science of how to share resources among competing uses. For example: • Should Brexit be seen as a positive? • Why did Toys R Us close down? • Why do Train Operators have so much power? All these questions involve sharing resources in the best way to make society better. What do I study in Economics? Microeconomics is in the first year, which looks at how markets allocate goods and services, how businesses operate in an economy, and why markets fail. Labour markets detail how workers and firms buy and sell labour, why business and trade unions make it difficult to get a job, and we research current labour market issues. A strong graphical element is in this part of the course, as well as some maths. The second year of the course is Macroeconomics, which looks at how the UK economy as a whole operates. Governments wish to control economic growth, inflation, and unemployment, so we look at government policies to achieve macroeconomic stability. We evaluate international trade from an economic and ethical point of view. To finish, we study how the global financial crash of 2008 affected the world economy as well as financial regulation to correct issues with the banking system.
