Course summary

Animal Management Level 3 Halesowen college has an outstanding, industry leading animal care unit with a variety of exotic mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, as well as domestic small animals. WE also have access to HappyPaws@B63 our exemplary dog grooming salon. If you are interested in Animal Management and working with a variety of animals then this course, consisting of practical and theory sessions, will give you relevant hands on experience. This is a comprehensive course if you want to increase your knowledge and develop an understanding of animals. During the course, you will study units that will give you knowledge and experience in areas such as Animal Biology, Animal Behaviour, Animal Welfare & Ethics, Practical Animal Husbandry and the Principles of Exotic Care. Units are flexible in the second year of course with learners able to choose pathways that best reflect their career aspirations such as veterinary nursing, conservation, ecology or working in the pet industry. In the practical sessions, you will learn Handling & Restraint Techniques, Accommodation Management and Feeding Regimes for a wide variety of animals including exotic mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. All students must complete 300 hours work experience in an animal related industry – one day a week will be allocated for this as part of your timetable. We have a dedicated work placement officer to support you with this plus access to over 50 local work placements. We are dedicated to enrichment and there will be a variety of enrichment activities and trips available to you as part of this course, previously students have taken part in coppicing, invertebrate surveys, bat walks, beach surveys plus visited locations such as the Elan Valley, Aberystwyth and Slapton Ley.
