Course summary

If you enjoy mathematics, get a kick out of problem-solving, enjoy the sheer power of mathematics and the elegance of its methods, and want a qualification which is widely respected by universities and employers alike, then Mathematics is the subject for you! If you have a natural ability and love of the subject then you may also consider Further Mathematics, especially if you wish to take a maths-based subject at university. Many universities require or encourage students to take further maths for entry to some of their courses including Science, Technology, Engineering and Finance. Why Mathematics? Mathematics is essential for a wide range of students, from those wishing to read Mathematics at university to those who need it to complement their chosen course.

Entry requirements

4 GSCE Grades B/5 or above, plus at least a Grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics. In order to be successful at A-level Mathematics you really need a grade 7 at GCSE. You must have completed the full GCSE higher course and be prepared to complete the bridging unit during the summer holidays.

How you'll be assessed

You will study two compulsory Pure Mathematics units. C1 and C2 You will then complete an Applied Mathematics unit either Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Maths. (The whole AS level will be assessed by examination). You will study two more Pure Mathematics units, C3 and C4. (These will be assessed by examinations). You will then complete another of the Applied Mathematics units listed above. (This unit will be assessed by examination).
