Course summary

In English Language A Level, you will get to explore and appreciate the rich tapestry of our native tongue, both its past, its present and its future; learning how to analyse and comment and to create texts of your own to match an audience. You will also consider varieties and linguistic diversity found within the language. You will investigate and evaluate English, looking at wide-ranging topics like gender, accent, child language acquisition and language change. You will consider how factors like society, work and prejudice can all play a part to shape our language. You will also hone your analytical writing skills and try your hand at original articles; undertake your own language investigation, analysing your chosen topic in detail; and create an original piece of writing. The course will often raise opposing viewpoints which will create a platform for debate with fellow students and lecturers.
