Past, present, future: Politics is everywhere we look. And it’s changing. Decisions that are made in government and other institutions can have a huge effect on our lives and the lives of others. Studying politics will give you a good understanding of the factors that are driving change all around us and how to make a difference yourself. Unless we understand how the government works, we will not be able to play a full and active part in society. We will seek to understand the crucial questions of where power lies and who gets what and why? Topics covered are: 1. Government and politics of the UK 2. Government and politics of the USA and comparative politics 3. Political ideas Some of the questions that will be raised are: Who makes decisions? What rights do we have? Can the existence of the monarchy be justified? Does the media influence or reflect public opinion? Why do some people not use their vote? Why do some groups resort to terrorism to achieve their aims? IS THIS COURSE FOR ME? You will develop a critical awareness of the changing nature of politics and the relationships between political ideas, political institutions, and political processes. Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of the structures of authority and power within the political system.
