Applied Science is a qualification covering all sciences - Chemistry, Biology and Physics - in a vocational context. The subject content is heavily linked to possible career paths, for example energy companies for Physics, Agricultural /medicinal science for Biology and laboratory analysis and research for Chemistry. This will give you an insight into what working in these fields could involve and prepares you for the future.
- To qualify for the Sixth Form we require all students to have at least 5 grades 4 or equivalent in a range of subjects.
How you will be assessed First year: You will study 3 units. 2 units will be externally assessed through exams, one covering content and the other one based on a scientific claim with questions. (can be compared to an English comprehension exam with questions about a piece of text). The third unit is coursework based where you will complete a practical investigation and then write a report on your findings. Each unit is equally weighted at 33.3% Second year: You will study a further 3 units. 1 unit will be an exam and the other 2 unit will be coursework based. The first piece of coursework has the same structure as year 1, looking at all 3 sciences while the second looks in-depth into one key area of science of your choice. Applied Science is run as a 2-year course, taking grades from all 6 units across the 2 years. Each unit is weighted equally and so has a 50/50 split between exam and coursework
