Course summary

The Extended Certificate is suitable for anyone with a keen interest in Health and Social Care and that is considering a career within this field. You will learn through practical assignments, tasks and written examinations. You will learn about human anatomy and physiology including malfunctions of our systems. Factors affecting human growth and development and the effects of ageing including dementia also investigating the roles and responsibilities of people who work in the health and social care sector, the organisations that offer various services and working with people with specific needs in the sector. Whilst studying meeting individual care and support needs you will develop skills of researching, role playing, and working in teams as you work on your assignments. The deadlines for the assignments will be planned over the year and it is important to adhere to the hand in dates, so good time management skills are essential. In this course you will study the following subjects: • Building Positive Relationships in Health and Social Care • Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care • Health, Safety and Security in Health and Social Care • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care • Public Health • Supporting People with Dementia

Entry requirements

• To enter Sixth Form you require 5 GCSE’s Grade 4 and above, including English or Maths. • For students who typically attain 9-4 grades at GCSE. • Grade 4 in English and at least Grade 4 in both sciences. This subject makes heavy demands for both exam and coursework elements, excellent time management skills are therefore essential. The largest section of the course is a 2 hour exam in Anatomy and Physiology. You will need to have a keen interest in continuing into a profession within the health or social care sectors.

How you'll be assessed

The OCR Extended Certificate has a range of written examinations, assignments and tasks. Projects are submitted for marking on a regular basis throughout the course. Deadlines must be adhered to. You will be graded pass, merit or distinction. The OCR Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A Level and carries a maximum of 56 UCAS points.
