Course summary

You will gain a deeper understanding of contemporary issues facing global citizens of the 21st century. You will learn about people and their societies, economies, cultures and their environments. This A level from AQA is split into a Physical Geography section, a Human Geography section, and a Geographical Investigation completed both in the Academy and independently. Geography is about how all of these topics and skills interact with each other. Some topics that you will look at are: • Hazards (physical); • Water and Carbon Cycles (physical); • Coastal Landscapes (physical); • Global Systems and Global Governance (human); • Contemporary Urban Environments (human); • Changing Places (human); • As well as your fieldwork and independent coursework. An A level in Geography can lead to a wide range of careers. This could be in the fields of education, local government, travel and tourism, journalism, meteorology, cartography, social services, overseas development, management or international banking. You will develop a wide range of skills including writing reports, analyzing and interpreting different sources of data, taking part in a team carrying out fieldwork and conducting decision-making exercises. In the past, Geography students have travelled to Iceland, Italy and Malaysian Borneo; there will be future such visits planned for the coming years.
