Fascinated by the human body? Studying other sciences? Or do you just want to understand the why behind sports performance? If so, A Level Physical Education is for you. The course will focus on the application of knowledge and provide you with the opportunity to develop transferable skills for employment and further study. Physical Education, Sport and Dance have always played an important role here at Wyke Sixth Form College, and although we are not a sports college we have twice been crowned “National Sports College of the Year”. You will acquire so many experiences from competing in National championships to competing against fellow students in an intra-tutor league, whatever the level and capability, there is something for everyone. The Sports Department has seen exceptional success both academically and competitively. Not only does the department offer both A Level and BTEC courses to accommodate several students across all assessment methods it is also ranked in the top one percent nationally. Subjects are taught by A Level and BTEC Level 3 specialist teachers and the coaching staff are of the highest calibre. Each member of staff is trained and dedicated to not only reaching academic success but also reaching the highest accolade possible when it comes to competing. In 2019 the department won a Pearson National Teaching Award and was announced as the best FE teaching team in the country. A Level of Physical Education is a great foundation for you to progress onto a range of exciting careers including Sports Science, Teaching, Physiotherapy, Coaching, Nutrition, Professional Sports Person, Personal Training and much more.
• Minimum 5 GCSEs • All grade 5 or above • Must include an English A Level of Physical Education requires you to achieve at least the minimum entry requirements for your chosen pathway plus a grade 5 or higher in GCSE PE or Science and regular participation in competitive sport or coaching role at a club required. The minimum entry requirements will be discussed at open events and your college interview.
70% THEORETICAL EXAMINATIONS: A total of four hours assessment split over three examination papers. These will be taken at the end of the two year course in a wide range of questioning styles including; single mark, short answer and extended response questions. 30% COURSEWORK: You will be assessed in one practical performance, as either a coach or a performer in an activity. You will also be required to analyse a sporting performance in the form of a verbal assessment COMPONENT 1: PHYSIOLOGICAL FACTORS IN SPORT EXAMINATION 1 – 2 HOURS (30%) This focuses on the key systems of the human body involved in movement and physical activity and understanding the changes within these body systems during exercise. COMPONENT 2: PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS IN SPORT EXAMINATION 2 – 1 HOUR (20%) This focuses on the psychological factors affecting sport, including; models and theories that affect learning ; how different methods of training and feedback work and why their effectiveness differs from person to person. COMPONENT 3: SOCIO-CULTURAL ISSUES IN SPORT EXAMINATION 2 – 1 HOUR (20%) This focuses on the sociological and contemporary issues that influence and affect physical activity and sport for both the audience and the performer, and how sport affects society. COMPONENT 4: NEA (NON-EXAMINED ASSESSMENT) COURSEWORK (30%) You will be assessed in either a performance or coaching role in your chosen sport, for which you must be competing regularly in you chosen sport, Alongside this, you will also complete a verbal analysis of a performer in your chosen sport, analysing their strengths and weaknesses, and suggesting a suitable training programme.
