Course summary

- You will develop knowledge of theatre and how theatre makers create meaning through performance. - You will study a range of plays from different periods and cultures. - You will develop performance skills for a wide range of drama practitioners. - You will develop a clear and critical appreciation of live theatre. If you have an interest in theatre and performance, this course is for you. At St Mary's, we are in a fortunate position to be able to teach year 12 and year 13 at the same time. This means that you will benefit from the expertise of your classmates and enjoy working collaboratively together. To succeed in the drama A Level, you need a strong commitment to independent group work and study alongside guided teaching. You will explore two different set texts, exploring characters, themes, socio-political influences and the cultural and historical impacts on the play. You will develop your knowledge of how these factors contribute to the creative vision for the plays. You will explore three further plays in a highly practical manner, applying the working practices of influential theatre companies and practitioners. You will also have the opportunity to create your work, exploring socio-political theatre at its very best. You will learn to develop a critical appreciation of live theatre, engaging in research into a range of productions. You will learn how to evaluate and appraise the work of professional performers and directors.
