- You will study a range of engaging and stimulating texts from the literary canon, as well as several non-fiction texts linked by theme. - Your skills in literary and linguistic analysis and interpretation will be developed to ensure you become a critical thinker. - You will be supported by highly skilled teachers with a wealth of academic knowledge and experience. Do you enjoy reading and analysing texts to gain a deeper understanding of literary and linguistic elements? Do you like exploring contextual factors that have helped construct important works of literature and non-fiction? Do you appreciate the importance of engaging with other critical interpretations to deepen your understanding of a text? Do you enjoy creative writing? Do you love deliberating with others to develop more complex interpretations of set texts? Do you enjoy features of both English Literature and English Language? If so, English Language and Literature is the course for you. You will learn to develop ambitious reading and analytical skills; read widely explore social and historical contexts, reflecting on how meaning is shaped by these contexts. You will learn to apply concepts and methods from both linguistic and literary study to texts being studied. You will learn features of the stylistic framework and apply this to a wide range of texts, such as The Handmaid’s Tale, The Great Gatsby, and A Streetcar Named Desire. You will scrutinise ways in which language reflects power relations within texts, and you will develop your creative skills by using a text as a springboard for your literary style. You will explore critical interpretations of your primary texts, which will develop your understanding, and will help cultivate your academic style. You will also explore key critical theories within the field of linguistic study, which will aid your understanding of the significance of this study. You will develop a confident and analytical voice that you can apply to the NEA tasks within the course, as well as your exam submissions.
