Course summary

Families and Households: This unit considers changes in family structures, patterns and trends: marriage, divorce, legislation, childhood, gender roles. It looks at sociological theory of the family; ideas, concepts and issues through changes in society; and how these changes have impacted on family life. Education with Research Methods: In this unit you will study the role of education. You will look at factors in education that impact on achievement; educational social policies; and relationships and processes, internal and external to institutions. You will also learn how sociological research is conducted in relation to education. Belief Systems in Society: This considers the changing role of science and religion in contemporary society and its significance through religious organisations/movements, social groups and participation. Crime and Deviance: Here you will focus on theorists’ explanations of crime and deviance; patterns by social groups; globalisation in contemporary society; control, prevention and punishment; and the sociological study of suicide.
