Course summary

Law comes under the Society Department’s umbrella of subjects. Like the other subjects within Society, Law is often a new subject for students. The course aims to give students an overview of how the law works, setting students up to understand processes that happen to them in real life. Students will study a subsidiary diploma in BTEC law over two years (equivalent to 1 A’ level). The BTEC is a much more practical course with on-going coursework. Within each unit there are Pass, Merit and Distinction tasks and students will be pushed to work to achieve the highest grade possible. In addition to the core lessons, teachers are on hand to deliver support and guidance throughout the two years. We also offer a number of trips to consolidate learning. Previous trips have included a trip to a newly opened police station, magistrates/crown court visits, trip to Brussels to visit the European Court and participation in a mock trial run by Leeds Crown Court. Alongside this are professional visitors to the college to discuss career paths and options with students. The course aims to provide students with a coherent introduction to study of the legal sector. While the course is well suited to students who would like to go into a career in the legal sector, the skills learnt across the course would be suited to many other courses and career areas. The qualification is equivalent to 1 A level.
