Course summary

Geography can lead to a career in using GIS, weather forecasting, flood management, logistics, town planning, law, environmental consultancy, and many other areas. It is a subject valued by universities and employers alike as students are equipped with inquiry, decision-making, and evaluative skills. Units Studied Year 12 Changing Places; Population and Environment; Coasts; Water and Carbon Cycles. We will study some familiar topics – building on what you already learned at GCSE for coasts, rivers, and population – but also some new ones that will be very different from GCSE. Changing Places will get you to look at Corby and places further afield with a fresh perspective. You will have one lesson a week focused on geographical skills – from crafting excellent answers to statistical analysis and carrying out fieldwork. You will also begin your NEA – non-examined assessment (essentially independent coursework) on a topic of your choice from what you study at A-level. The NEA requires students to choose an aspect of what they study at A-level Geography and investigate this to build on current geographical knowledge. You will have four days of fieldwork. Units Studied Year 13 Hazards, Global Governance, Completing NEA The Hazards unit focuses on the lithosphere and the atmosphere, which present natural hazards to human populations, often in dramatic and sometimes catastrophic fashion. By exploring the origin and nature of these hazards and the various ways in which people respond to them, students will be able to engage with the many dimensions of the relationships between people and the environments they live in. Global governance focuses on globalization – the economic, political, and social changes associated with technological and other driving forces that have been a key feature of the global economy and society in recent decades.
