Course summary

Carpenters work on both new build and renovation schemes, on projects ranging from house extensions to city centre commercial development. A carpenter works to build stud partitions, roof trusses; fits doors and windows; fits floorboards and stairs: This course aims to provide a basic knowledge of site carpentry and to develop and practise the skills for employment and a career in this craft area. This is an ideal course for those who are looking to learn on a full-time basis and have identified that they want to enter the construction industry and have a career as a site carpenter. Site Carpentry study programmes start with a level 1 certificate or level 1 diploma. Learners progress from this to level 2 either as a full-time learner or as part-time as an apprentice. These study programmes include learning that relates to the following UN Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 4: Quality education Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities All study programmes cover health, safety, and principles of construction relevant to the trade. They also aim to develop practical skills for this craft. With this, you will study: Principles of construction How to work safely in a construction environment How to construct a stud partition wall How to construct a timber floor How to hang a door How to set up and use a range of hand and power Tools At level 3, you will have the opportunity to study an awareness programme on Retrofit.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs 9-4 OR GCSE English and Maths Grades 9-3 and the Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery

How you'll be assessed

All study programme assessment at level 1 is continuous throughout the academic year. Theory subjects are assessed through examination. Practical assessment is continuous throughout the year with a synoptic assessment in the summer term. At levels 2 and 3 Theory is assessed through an externally set examination and coursework; with practical skills assessed through an externally set synoptic assessment completed in May.
