Course summary

The English Literature course at Weatherhead allows students to read and study literature through the lens of genre and theory, encouraging the independent study of texts within a shared context. Students are required to include a range of wider reading, which extends students’ experience and appreciation of literature. There is clear progression from GCSE and this course allows students to build on the skills and knowledge already gained. Students will have the opportunity to study a range of texts including ‘Othello’, a range of poetry through the ages, ‘The Great Gatsby’ and a selection of texts based on the First World War. There are a variety of assessment styles: passage based questions, unseen material, single and multiple text questions and open and closed book approaches. These assessment styles allow students to develop a wide range of skills, such as the ability to read critically, analyse, evaluate and undertake independent research which are valuable for both further study and future employment. There is also the opportunity to complete an extended NEA (NonExamined Assessment) totalling 20% of the final grade and students have the freedom to explore a range of texts independently.
