Course summary

Why choose this course? This is a really hands-on course that will give you plenty of opportunities for creativity and problem-solving. Throughout the course, students will develop their knowledge and skills through the completion of a range of tasks and workshops throughout Year 12 and Year 13. What will I study? This is a linear qualification made up of two components. You will study theory throughout the two-year course in preparation for the Component 1 exam in June of Year 13. In Year 12, students will make a replica product of a nutcracker, a task that develops problem-solving skills and technical manufacturing skills with an engineering focus. Following on from this, students will create and develop high-quality models and prototypes of existing products using modeling materials such as cardboard, cards, polystyrene, and foam boards. This element is focused on improving model quality while also introducing and building on the iterative design cycle. By Easter of Year 12, students will begin their component 2 unit. Component 1: Design and Technology in the 21st Century (written examination): Students will undergo theory-based lessons throughout the two-year course where they will investigate materials, how they work, and their suitability for a range of uses. Students will complete a 3-hour exam to demonstrate and apply two years' worth of knowledge and study. Component 2 Design and make project (non-exam assessment): A sustained design and make project, based on a brief developed by the candidate, assessing the candidate's ability to: identify, investigate, and outline design possibilities design and make prototypes, and analyze and evaluate design decisions and outcomes, including for prototypes made by themselves and others The design and make project will be based within the same endorsed area as the written examination.

Entry requirements
