Course summary

Even closer business links between Britain and the rest of the world are creating more opportunities for those with language skills. At university, languages can be studied as a single or joint honors, and many prestigious offer this. In addition, languages can also be combined with many other subjects such as accountancy, law, business, marketing, engineering, linguistics, media, and tourism. The options are endless as are the possibilities for future employment. Studying a language at A level also helps to develop your verbal and written communication skills to a high level and promotes an understanding of your own language. Students have to study and develop opinions on a wide range of different topic areas. This knowledge and skills can be applied to a range of other subjects. This subject is suitable for students who love learning a different language. You will need to be hard-working, well-organized, and enthusiastic about language and culture. You need to be willing to communicate with others and be able to express your ideas and opinions effectively. The course is usually taught by two teachers and you will have 5 hours a week. In addition to this, you would be expected to spend another five hours of independent study learning vocabulary, developing your listening and reading skills through watching films and television and reading newspapers and magazine articles in French. You will study a film in Y12 and then a book in Y13. For the speaking assessment, you are able to choose your own topic to research and you will present and discuss your findings in the speaking assessment at the end of year 13.
