Over two years, you will explore the world of literature, discovering a diverse range of texts that span centuries and genres. This course revolves around the art of communication —how writers communicate with us and how we, in turn, communicate our ideas about what we read, both through written essays and lively discussions. The expertise in communication skills acquired through this course is highly prized by employers across various industries, making it a valuable asset for a wide range of careers. Additionally, these skills are invaluable for university studies in any discipline, ensuring that this A Level is relevant even for those not pursuing an English degree. Moreover, English Literature is on the Russell Group Universities ‘ list of ‘facilitating subjects,’ cementing its status as a desirable choice.
General entry requirements are 5 or more GCSEs graded 4/5 or above including English Language, and ideally, Maths. To be able to take this course, a minimum grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language and English Literature is required. A passion for reading is also essential.
At the culmination of the two-year program, you will have two exams, which account for 80% of the overall marks. You will be provided with copies of all the texts in the exams, apart from Othello. Paper 1 examines the text you have studied for unit 1. There is also a question asking you to compare and contrast 2 poems you have not seen before. Paper 2 asks you to write about the texts studied for unit 2. You will also be asked to analyse a passage from a post-1945 prose text (novel) which you will not have studied. The remaining 20% will be assessed through a coursework essay of 2500 words covering the texts studied for unit 3.
