
An “A” Level in Spanish builds upon the linguistic skills and vocabulary gained during your GCSE course. There is a greater emphasis on both grammatical knowledge and spontaneity in order to equip you to write essays and have a detailed discussion in the exams. The Year 12 course covers a variety of contemporary issues: - Aspects of Spanish-speaking society (traditional and modern values, the digital world, equality of the sexes) - Artistic culture in the Spanish-speaking world (the influence of celebrities, regional identity in Spain, cultural heritage) - An authentic film (‘Volver’ directed by Pedro Almodóvar) The year 13 course covers further contemporary issues: - Aspects of Spanish-speaking Society (immigration, racism, coexistence of cultures) - Aspects of political life in the Spanish-speaking World (contemporary social youth issues, monarchies and dictatorships, social movements) - An authentic text (‘Como agua para chocolate by Laura Esquivel) - Independent research project (IRP) on a subject of your choice
Students who wish to study three A levels must achieve a minimum of: Six GCSE’s at grade 6 or above; and GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English (Language or Literature) at grade 5 or above Students must achieve a grade 6 in Spanish at GCSE.
- 16-18 minute speaking examination - Listening, reading, and translation examination - Writing examination (literature/film)
