English Language and Literature
Course summary
For those who enjoy reading acclaimed literature and are keen to learn more about how writers create their imaginative worlds. It will also appeal if you’re interested in developing your analysis and creative skills, exploring language, literary concepts and context. Units include: • studying a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. • explore theories, themes and concepts relating to the development of language. • investigating distinctive styles of speech and writing and how they are used. • creative writing. You will learn to apply integrated literary and linguistic analysis to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts. You will become proficient in the knowledge of terminology from different language levels and learn how to consider contextual influences on texts. You will explore different historical periods, linguistic and literary theories, different genre conventions, as well psychological theories linked to communication. This course works with many opportunities, including the Extended Project (EPQ), Hinglish, mentoring through the Portsmouth Scholars scheme and Unloc’s ‘You Speak’ debating competition.
