The Advanced GCE in Spanish has been designed to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the language and Spanish culture in Europe and the Spanish-speaking world. At Advanced Level GCE in Spanish you will cover 7 units of work which include: • Theme 1: The Evolution of Spanish Society (changes in family structure, the working world, touristic impact) • Theme 2: Political and Artistic Culture in the Hispanic World (music, media, festivals and traditions) • Theme 3: Immigration and Multicultural Spanish Society (positive impacts, confronting challenged to immigration and integration, social and public reaction) • Theme 4: The Franco Dictatorship and Transition Towards Democracy (Civil War and rise of Franco, Franco’s dictatorship, transition to democracy) • Grammar • Literary Texts and Film - The study of two texts or one text and one film • Individual Research Project – to be discussed in the speaking assessment By the end of the course you will have learnt the fundamentals of the Spanish language enabling you to travel, live or work in a Spanish-speaking country.
Minimum GCSE Grade & Subject (s) if you have studied the subject in Year 11 - Grade 6 in GCSE Spanish
Paper 1 – listening, reading and translation (40%) (2 hours) Section A: respond to recordings in Spanish (listening) (30 marks) Section B: respond to comprehension questions about Spanish texts (reading) (30 marks), Section C: translation of unseen passage into English (20 marks) Paper 2 Written response to works and translation (30%) (2 hours 40 minutes) Section A: Unseen translation into Spanish (20 marks), Section B: written response to literary texts (50 marks), Section C: Written response to film (50 marks) Paper 3 – Spoken exam – speaking - 21-23 minutes – 30% Task 1: Discuss on theme from the specification (30 marks), Task 2: Part 1 – independent research project, part 2 – discussion of independent research project (42 marks) These qualifications are assessed online with examinations taking place at school. The course is based on 100% examination.
