Sociology is the study of society, so it is concerned with what people do and why. Sociology is a theoretical subject that uses historical and contemporary arguments and debates to make sense of society and fully investigate the society in which we live. As we continue to live in an ever- changing world, you will consider global inequality, poverty, racism, sexism, gangs and crime. Sociology is an excellent complement to other A-Levels such as Health and Social Care, Psychology, Criminology, History, English, and many more! The topics you cover are: • Research methods • Culture and socialisation • Youth culture • Media • Crime and deviance
To be accepted on this course, you must have a total of 5 GCSEs. English grade 6 or higher is required. Individual consideration will be given to students at grade 5. You do not need to have previously studied sociology; however, a grade 5 in GCSE Sociology is required if you have completed GCSE Sociology. In addition, enthusiasm and passion for the subject are required.
Sociology does not require any course work because it is an examination-based course. There will be three exams with a mix of short and long answer questions at the end of year 13.
