Biology
Course summary
Biology involves the study of a wide range of exciting topics, ranging from molecular biology to the study of ecosystems. Biology is never far from the headlines. The human genome has been sequenced and we know the complete arrangement of the three thousand million bases that make up human DNA. In Kenya, 350 people die every day from AIDS and in South East Asia, skies are dark with smoke as the Bornean rainforests are burned to grow oil palms. Biologists are concerned with all these issues, and their work is vital to us all. The Friary has links with the Lichfield Science and Engineering Society, and as well as attending the annual Erasmus Darwin Lecture, we also organise lectures from leading biologists. There are opportunities to learn outside the classroom on residential visits. Recent trips have included the Erasmus Darwin Lectures, Biology Live and a field trip to the island of Capri on the south coast of Italy.
