Course summary

3D Product Design is assessed in three separate stages. The course is split between two written papers and one Non-Exam Assessment. Each is broken down as follows. Paper 1 - Technical Principals (120 marks) In this section you will explore industry and the methods behind manufacturing and material selection. We will expand on information covered at GCSE in particular material applications, characteristics and testing, performance and enhancement of materials, Digital Design and manufacturing; and finally design for manufacturing maintenance, repair and disassembly. Paper 2 - Design and Making Principals (80 marks) This section will explore the design process and look at how we ideate and create functional products with real world use, with particular focus on user interaction. Noteworthy content in this section includes the Iterative Design process, Design Theory, Impact of technology and cultural changes in design, Critical Analysis and investigation, accuracy in design and manufacture and responsible design. Non Examination Assessment - Project work (200 marks) This project consists of a 40 page portfolio exploring a design context of your choice. The portfolio will consist of research, tests and investigations, client interaction, design sketches, digital and physical prototyping, manufacturing plans, a final working product and closing evaluations. This is a culmination of the content covered in previous two sections and is a showcase of your ability to deduce and make use of said content in a practical aspect.
