Course summary

In Film Studies we explore a range of films from different time periods and cultures. From the 1925 Soviet Union to Brazil in the early 2000s, we chart the history and development of film over the two-year course. We examine the themes and ideas behind these films; apply psychological, sociological, and literary theories to these films; explore societal issues exposed by them, and unpick directors’ creative decisions and what their intentions may have been. Through the NEA, you will have the opportunity to sample the creative side of film, by choosing between a practical filmmaking project or a written screenplay. Topics Studied: ● Hollywood 1930-1990 (Comparative Study): The Lady from Shanghai & Blade Runner ● American Film Since 2005: Captain Fantastic & Inception ● British Film Since 1995: Shaun of the Dead and This is England ● Global Film: Pan’s Labyrinth and City of God ● Documentary Film: Amy ● Film Movements – Silent Cinema: Strike ● Film Movements – Experimental Cinema: Pulp Fiction ● Short Film Study ● NEA – Short Film Production and Evaluative Analysis
