Course summary

Duffy and Larkin: Students will learn to compare the poetry in Carol Ann Duffy’s Mean Time with Philip Larkin’s The Whitsun Weddings. They will also learn to consider alternative interpretations and contextual details. Blake: Students will learn about selected poetry by William Blake. They will also learn to consider alternative interpretations and contextual details. A Streetcar Named Desire and The Duchess of Malfi: Students will learn to compare Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire with Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi. They will also learn to consider alternative interpretations and contextual details. Hamlet: Students will learn about William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. They will also learn to consider alternative interpretations and contextual details. Unseen Poetry: Students will develop skills in understanding and analyzing unseen poetry. Unseen Prose: Students will develop skills in understanding and analyzing unseen prose. They will also learn to consider alternative interpretations and contextual details. A Room With A View and Prose Study: Students will learn about Forster’s A Room With A View and will learn to compare it with a prose text of their choice. They will also learn to consider alternative interpretations and contextual details. What can students do with this qualification: Studying English Literature can open the door to an array of career paths such as law, journalism, film/TV production, advertising and marketing, teaching, politics, public relations, and publishing.

5 GCSE’s at grade 4 and above including English or Maths Grade 6 in GCSE English Literature or Language

Assessed through 3 examinations at the end of Year 13 and a Non-Exam Assessment assessed in school. Component 1: Exam Paper 1: Poetry (30%) Component 2: Exam Paper 2: Drama (30%) Component 3: Exam Paper 3: Unseen Texts (20%) Component 4: Non-Exam Assessment: Prose Study (20%)
