Course summary

You will learn in depth about how the body works from a movement point of view (skeleton, muscles, heart and lungs, energy systems and training), from a psychological view (learning of skills, memory, factors that affect performance, functioning as a group) and a social, historical and cultural point of view. Lessons will be a mixture of formal taught lessons, group work, presentations, videos and practical lessons whenever relevant. There is not a specific practical lesson as there is at GCSE level. The course will be presented in the following format: Unit 1: Opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle: Physiology, Skill Acquisition (Psychology), and Sociology. Unit 2: Analysis and evaluation of physical activity as a performer and/or in adopted role/s. Unit 3: Optimising performance and evaluating contemporary issues within sport: Physiology, Skill acquisition (Psychology), and Sociology. Unit 4: Optimising practical performance in a competitive situation.

Entry requirements

- You will need Physical Education 6, Science 6, English Language 5. Those who have not had the opportunity to do this will be considered on an individual basis. - At least 6 GCSE subjects at Grade 6 or above. - At least a Grade 5 in English. - At least a Grade 5 in Mathematics.

How you'll be assessed

The course will be a mixture of examinations (2 hours at the end of Year 12 and 2 hours at the end of Year 13), practical coursework (in Year 12 and Year 13) and written coursework (Year 13 only). You will be assessed in your ability to perform effectively in two of the following roles in a chosen activity: practical performer; official/referee/umpire/judge; leader/coach.
