Further Mathematics is also often a requirement for Science courses at Oxford, Cambridge, and other highly competitive universities. Year 1: Paper 1: Introduces topics such as Complex Numbers; Matrices; Polar Coordinates & Hyperbolic Functions. Whilst extending the work done in AS Maths on Algebra, Functions & Calculus. Paper 2: You study Mechanics and statistics (equally weighted): Mechanics: Extends the work in AS Maths to look at Dimensional Analysis; Collisions; Work, Energy and power, and Circular Motion. Statistics: Extends the work in AS Maths to look at Discrete and continuous Random Variables; The Poisson Distribution; Type I & II errors & Chi tests. Year 2: The A-level exam comprises 3 papers. Paper 1 is Pure Maths. Paper 2 is Pure Maths. Paper 3 is Applied Maths (Mechanics & Statistics). Paper 1 & 2: Expands on the topics introduced in AS Further Maths (Paper 1) as well as introducing Differential Equations (1st & 2nd order) and Numerical Methods.
