Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. The course covers all the main, traditional areas of Psychology and some more current and applied areas, as well as developing the students’ understanding of Psychological research and their ability to carry out small-scale research studies. Paper 1 - Introductory topics in Psychology: Social Influence, Memory, Attachment and Psychopathology. Paper 2 - Psychology on Context: Approaches in Psychology, Research Methods and Bio-Psychology. Paper 3 - Issues and debates in Psychology plus 3 options in Psychology chosen from the following: Relationships/Gender/Cognition and Development, plus one from Schizophrenia/Eating Behaviour/ Stress and one from: Aggression/Forensic Psychology/Addiction.
At least one Grade 5 in Science and Grade 4 in English and Maths 5 x grade 4 GCSEs or equivalent to be able to complete them at sixth form
The course is assessed by 3 x 2 hour exams at the end of Year 13. Exams include longer answer essay questions, multiple-choice questions, shorter knowledge-based questions and questions requiring the students to apply their understanding to new situations.
