Chemistry A-Level is an exciting, laboratory-based course, which explores the laws of chemistry and demonstrates how these laws and the skills of the chemist have been exploited to give us our present high standard of living. Practical work is a fundamental part of the approach to the teaching and learning of Chemistry. Over the two years, you will study organic, inorganic and physical Chemistry, general and practical principles in Chemistry, and undertake the Practical Endorsement assessment. Chemistry is a challenging subject, and the A-Level now places a greater emphasis on mathematical skills, with 20% of exam questions requiring a high level of mathematical ability. To access to the top grades, therefore, we strongly advise studying either Maths A-Level, or at least another Science A-Level, alongside Chemistry A-Level. From experience, we have found that students who obtain an A.P.S. score of less than 6.0+ at GCSE, go on to struggle with the demand and content of A-Level Chemistry.
- For Single Scientists: grade 6 in Chemistry GCSE, one other Science GCSE and Maths GCSE, and grade 5 in one English GCSE - For Combined Scientists: grades 6-6 in Combined Science GCSEs including grade 6s in all Chemistry modules, grade 6 in Maths GCSE and grade 5 in one English GCSE - Students need a to achieve a minimum of a grade 4 in Maths and one of the English GCSEs, and ideally a GCSE Average Point Score (A.P.S.) of at least 4.0, in order to be able to access any of our Level 3 Vocational and A-Level courses.
