A-Level work builds on and broadens the skills learnt during the GCSE course to allow a more effective approach to solving a problem for a specific client: this is achieved by researching, analysing, presenting design ideas, manufacturing the solution to the problem and evaluating the outcome to ensure it meets the needs of the client. Project work is guided but we do allow for some freedom of choice in selecting an area of study and development. The course includes study of Technical Principles, Designing and Making Principles, and a Substantial Design and Make Project. It should be noted that the examinations contain a significant amount of mathematics including the use of ratios, calculations of volume, trigonometry, statistics and probability so students need to be mathematically capable. Please also note that students are required to work independently on coursework during lessons and in non-contact time. Students do need to recognise this required extra-curricular commitment when opting for this subject.
- Grade 6 in Design Technology: Product Design GCSE - Students need a to achieve a minimum of a grade 4 in Maths and one of the English GCSEs, and ideally a GCSE Average Point Score (A.P.S.) of at least 4.0, in order to be able to access any of our Level 3 Vocational and A-Level courses.
50% Coursework / 50% Exam.
