Logic / Philosophy
Course summary
Religious Studies allows you to engage with the fundamental questions of human existence. It brings you face to face with the myriad ways in which the greatest human minds have attempted to answer these questions over the centuries, and asks you to reflect on them and justify your own view. For an opportunity to discuss the biggest questions in life, and to get an idea of how to answer them! On the course you will encounter some of the most fascinating, controversial and enduring human ideas from the past few millennia, from Socrates to Peter Singer, and Aristotle to AJ Ayer. The challenge of the subject is to understand and be able to critique all the arguments you encounter, and to defend the arguments you find to be the strongest. In doing so, the subject enables you to better understand yourself and to take your place alongside the great thinkers in the history of human thought. Religious Studies is a challenging, discussion-based subject. It is about making you think, and the nature of the subject makes it open-ended. As is often said about RS, there are no wrong answers (although there are plenty of bad ones!). The subject aims to help you articulate sound answers to the big questions. Religious Studies also has consistently excellent results (100% A*-C Summer 2023, 48% A*-A grades).
