You will study a broad range of historical issues and controversies from the 19th and 20th centuries to enable you to develop a critical and comparative understanding of themes in world and European history, including authoritarian states and the development and fall of Communism. Higher Level students also specialise in 18th to 20th-century European history, exploring revolutions and the rise of the nation-state, studying revolutionary France and Imperial, Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia. Through case studies, you’ll get to grips with concepts such as causation, continuity and change over time, and explore varied historical perspectives. For the IA you will investigate a historical question of your own choice, equipping you with essential research skills and preparing you for study beyond college. Recent topics have included: Causes of Tiananmen Square protests in China, the influence of King James 1st's Daemonologie on the Witch Craze in Early Modern England, Eva Peron's influence on the status of women in Argentina.
