A Level History is excellent at embedding skills for a wide variety of careers. You will study The British Empire, c1857-1967 - this unit allows you to study, in breadth, issues of change, continuity, cause, and consequence during this period. You will also study The Birth of the USA, 1760-1801 - this unit provides the opportunity for an in-depth study of the years in which the 13 American colonies broke away from Great Britain and founded the USA. The third part is a historical investigation - this is a Non-exam assessment component.
You will need 5 GCSEs at 9/A* to 4/C including Maths and English. A minimum grade 5 in English Literature or English Language is required. It is strongly recommended that you have a 4/C or above in History and an inquiring mind. You will also be required to complete a GCSE to A Level Transition Project prior to enrolment.
This is a two-year linear A Level where you are examined on the whole syllabus at the end of the second year. Each project is assessed as a portfolio of work. 80% of the course is assessed via 5 hours of examinations at the end of the 2 years. There is also a personal study of 3,000 - 4,500 words worth 20%. To prepare for external exams, you will carry out a program of weekly tests, exam-style assessments, and Formal Progress Points where you will monitor your attendance, how hard you are working, and your academic progress. All Year 1 students will progress through a Year 1 Gateway that will allow you to progress to Year 2.
