Course summary

A level Film Studies is for students who want to immerse themselves in a wide variety of films from different countries and different eras. Film is an academic A level that will hone your critical thinking and enrich your understanding of the world around you, as well as your place in the global community. You will study modern British, American, and global cinema, documentary, experimental, and 1920s silent films and will come to understand the impact of individual creative choices and the context in which they were produced. You will build a strong understanding of film language and increase your analytical and interpretative proficiency. You will also gain real-world technical skills in the coursework unit through the use of industry-standard editing software, or specialist screenwriting software in making your own short film or screenplay. We take part in industry careers events and run a number of enrichments including We Call the Shots, our young women’s media careers project. Our students also regularly take part in the highly-regarded BFI schemes.
