This exciting BTEC National in Applied Science offers a vocational qualification that focuses on the application of science, building the skills you need to be successful in employment within science organizations or organizations that use science. It also provides the foundations you will need to follow a degree in biomedical or forensic science. Within the qualification, you will study laboratory science, scientific procedures, and skills, and biological, chemical, and physical science. It is designed for learners who are interested in learning about the sector alongside other fields of study, to progress to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in applied science. This qualification offers an approach that is different from A-level qualifications in science and will appeal to you if you prefer portfolio-based assessment alongside final exams, covering a variety of scientific investigations. The course does, however, require you to be self-motivated and well-organized as regular assignments are set throughout the two-year course! At the end of Year 13, you will be awarded a grade which will be a Pass, Merit, or Distinction. BTEC Nationals are recognized by Universities as a Level 3 course, and grades convert into UCAS points equivalent to one A-Level. There are 3 mandatory and 1 option units covered across the two-year course: • The Principles and Applications of Science I • Science Investigation skills • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques • Physiology of Human Body Systems BTEC Nationals have been developed in consultation with industry and appropriate sector bodies to ensure that the qualification content and approach to assessment align closely with the needs of employers. This qualification will also allow access to an Applied Science degree as well as jobs within the science industry or access courses in Medical Sciences.
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including two sciences (or combined science double award), English and Maths.
There are 2 externally set exams which account for 58% of the qualification • Paper 1: The Principles and Applications of Science I – sat as three 40-minute papers. • Paper 2: Science Investigation skills – sat as a practical followed by a 1.5-hour written paper. The remaining two units are assessed internally via assignments.
