Course summary

The A-level French curriculum builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills gained at GCSE with a focus on language, culture and society. It fosters a range of transferable skills including communication, critical thinking, research skills and creativity, which are valuable to the individual and society. The content is suitable for students who wish to progress to employment or further study, including a modern languages degree. In Year 12 we concentrate on current trends in society and the artistic culture of the country. In year 13 these themes are further explored along with political trends within the country. The courses naturally extend the knowledge and skills that students will have acquired at GCSE, not only in terms of grammar, vocabulary and spoken fluency, but also in terms of developing an appreciation of the deeper nature of the language and country, a consideration which goes hand in hand with the study of social, historical, literary and cultural aspects. Cultural awareness and linguistic fluency are further enhanced by analysis of a work of literature, a film, and the opportunity to visit the city of Paris.
