Photography is a popular subject at A Level, with many students attracted to the combination of technical instruction and the creative freedom it offers. Students who study A Level Photography will have considerable scope in choosing and pursuing their own projects. As a result, the work of our students and the department’s expertise is diverse. Photography is a creative and practical course which combines technical aspects of image making with the exploration of ideas through a range of techniques, media, and processes. Within the course, you will develop an understanding of DSLR cameras, studio lighting and Adobe Photoshop. Photography develops a wide range of skills, analytical and critical thinking and problem solving, which will be useful at university and future careers. Photography may offer a highly creative and hands-on alternative to other subjects you may be studying at A level.
Five GCSEs grade 4 or above. In addition, a minimum grade 5 in GCSE Art and/or Photography.
Students will be marked based on the AQA four assessment objectives. Emphasis will be on understanding, experimentation, and development of ideas through various photographic techniques, processes, and mediums. Formal assessment will take place at the end of each year. Practical 5-hour mock exam in Year 12 and controlled 15-hour exam in Year 13. Overall grade is based on 60% coursework and 40% external set exam.
