Course summary

This subject will offer an exciting opportunity to embrace textile, fashion and design, looking at the design industry from an artist’s perspective. It will introduce you to the contemporary approach of the industry and encourage you to flourish as a potential textile designer, looking at a variety of techniques. Students are given the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and practical experience in both fashion and textiles or may concentrate on one. You will develop your creativity, observation, research, investigation and experimentation skills through the use of a range of art materials and techniques. Presentation skills, analytical skills and knowledge of fashion and textile design will also be developed. You will investigate themes and artists’/designers’ work within textiles projects. Students are expected to maintain sketchbooks showing detailed investigation, experimental and research processes as evidence of developing original ideas. In addition, photoshoots, fashion shows and presentations are an important aspect of the course.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades at 9 – 4 (or equivalent) including English and Maths.

How you'll be assessed

Your overall grade is composed of 60% coursework and 40% exam. Your coursework comprises the projects that you complete during Year 12 and 13 as well as a personal investigation which involves a written element of 1000-3000 words. Your exam is a project with an externally set starting point which culminates in a 15 hour supervised assessment.
