Assessment

All units are graded Pass, Merit, or Distinction. Unit 10- 'Graphics Materials, Techniques and Processes', and Unit 3 - 'The Creative Process' is assessed internally. Unit 1'Visual Recording' and Unit 2 - 'Critical & Contextual Studies' are assessed externally by the exam board. Unit 10 Graphics Materials, Techniques & Processes: This unit is designed for students to experiment with a range of techniques that will include drawing, illustration, digital design, and packaging design techniques. Students apply the skills they learn during the experimentation stage to a project that enables them to create an outcome to suit a brief. Unit 1 Visual Recording and Communication: The key purpose of this unit is to research Graphic Designers and produce a response to a given theme. This theme is determined by the exam board and changes each year. This is an opportunity to work in a more independent way using students' strengths and interests. You will be given a period of monitored preparation and independent research before a 3-hour supervised practical assessment Unit 2 Critical and Contextual Studies: The key purpose of this assessment is for learners to research contextual influences in art and design in response to a brief set by the exam board, producing a written response to contextual studies. You will be given a period of monitored preparation and independent research before a 3.5-hour supervised written assessment. Unit 3 The Creative Process: Students explore the creative process in a brief/scenario and then present the process. You will research how designers and artists develop ideas and themes, and then apply this process to your work. This is another opportunity to exploit students' practical strengths and interests, working within any area of Graphic Design. This could include a design for print, web, user experience design (apps), animation, illustration, typography, branding, and more.
