Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, students design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others needs, wants and values. Students acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Students learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable individuals. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. This creative and thought-provoking qualification will give you the practical skills, theoretical knowledge and confidence to succeed in a number of careers, especially those in the design and creative industries. You will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on design and technology, whilst enjoying opportunities to put your learning into practice by producing prototypes of your designs. You will gain real understanding of what it means to be a product designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers.
- You must have a minimum grade 5 in Design and Technology or equivalent specialisms, e.g., graphic product design, engineering, fashion and textiles or resistant materials, etc. It is also recommended that you have a level 4 or above in mathematics, English and science. We will consider students with a desire to pursue a career in Design but have not had an opportunity to accrue the required entry qualifications. You will need an interview and a portfolio of work in these circumstances - All students must have gained a minimum of five grades 9-4 at GCSE to gain entry onto Level 3 courses, which should include English and Maths at GCSE.
Written examination: 3 hours 50% of qualification. Design and make project Non-exam assessment: approximately 80 hours 50% of qualification. A sustained design and make project, based on a brief developed by the candidate,
