Course summary
The qualification is for students wanting to pursue a career in construction by progressing directly to employment as a civil engineering technician or to higher education. The qualification is intended to meet the educational base for registration as a technician, for example with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), once you are in employment. This qualification provides the knowledge, understanding and skills that will allow students to progress to further education, or directly to employment or an Apprenticeship in the construction sector. The mandatory units will cover foundation mathematical, design and scientific principles, as applied in a construction context. They introduce a range of technologies and their application in the industry, and the principles of site surveying and site engineering. The health and safety unit will introduce students to their personal responsibilities for health, safety and welfare, the industry and legislative requirements for health and safety, and the application of organisational processes and risk management to ensure compliance. Working toward an Extended Diploma in Civil Engineering over a two year period you will be studying various units including: Construction Principles, Construction Technology, Tendering and Estimating, Construction Technology Graphical Detailing in Construction, Building Surveying in Construction, Measurement Techniques in Construction, Further Mathematics for Construction, Projects in Construction and Construction in Civil Engineering.
