The key questions in psychology enquire scientifically about the human mind and behavior: ‘Why do people act in such a way?’ This subject offers the chance to try to understand human behavior and the human mind in the modern world from a systematic and scientific perspective, examining and critically analyzing established research conducted by psychologists. The course is designed to provide you with a broad understanding of Psychology and a variety of teaching and learning methods will be used including teacher-led activities, small group work, personal independent research, and class discussion. Role-play and class-based demonstrations may also be used. You will be encouraged to make use of the vast array of information available online, in books, on TV, in film, on the radio, and in other media. You must be prepared to study hard, engage with the subject both inside and outside the classroom, read widely, and independently, and practice your writing technique. Modules include: Paper 1: Social Influence, Memory, Attachment and Psychopathology. Paper 2: Approaches, Biopsychology and Research Methods. Paper 3: Issues & Debates, Relationships, Schizophrenia and Aggression.
We expect students to achieve Grade 4 (or the equivalent) in 5 subjects. 5 in Maths and English; plus 55 Combined Science or 5 in Biology.
A level of Psychology is assessed by three exams at the end of Year 13, which make up 100% of the qualification. All three papers are 2 hours long and each is worth 33.3% of the overall A-level marks.
