Course summary

A-Level Biology offers students a thrilling opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of life sciences, building on the foundational knowledge gained at GCSE. Throughout this immersive two-year course, students will engage with a wide array of topics that unravel the complexities of living organisms and their interactions with the environment. As part of the curriculum, students will participate in 12 core practicals that are not just an essential part of the course but also a hands-on experience that fosters critical laboratory skills. These practicals will cover a diverse range of investigative topics, enabling students to hone their abilities in manipulating, analysing, and evaluating data, which are crucial skills in any scientific endeavour. The excitement of discovery in the lab complements the theoretical aspects of the course, making the study of biology a truly dynamic experience. Throughout the A-Level Biology journey, students will explore key themes such as biological molecules, the intricacies of cellular structures, and how organisms exchange substances with their environment. They will delve into the mysteries of genetic information, variation, and the relationships between organisms, while also studying energy transfers within and between living systems. Understanding how organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments will deepen their appreciation for the complexity of life. In addition to these core topics, students will investigate advanced concepts such as genetics, population dynamics, evolution, and ecosystems, as well as the fascinating mechanisms that control gene expression. This comprehensive curriculum not only broadens students’ scientific horizons but also prepares them for further studies in various fields such as medicine, environmental science, and biotechnology. Assessment in A-Level Biology is structured across three separate papers, each designed to evaluate different aspects of the curriculum, including theoretical knowledge, practical application, and critical analysis. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to receive additional certification that recognises their practical skills, highlighting their competency in laboratory techniques and experimental design.

Entry requirements
