Course summary
Studying Food Science and Nutrition in Key Stage 5 provides students with an engaging and hands-on opportunity to develop the practical skills and knowledge gained in GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition. The Level 3 Diploma in Food Science and Nutrition provides exciting, interesting experiences that focus upon applied learning, i.e. through the acquisition of knowledge and understanding in purposeful, work-related contexts, linked to the food production industry. The course prepares students for further education in courses such as BSc Food and Nutrition, BSc Human Nutrition, BSc (Hons) Public Health Nutrition and BSc (Hons) Food Science and Technology. Food Science and Nutrition allows students to: • Understand properties of nutrients, the relationship between nutrients and the human body and be able to plan nutritional requirements. • Plan production of and cook complex dishes. • Understand the importance of food safety, how micro- organisms affect food safety, how food can cause ill health and how food safety is managed in different situations. • Understand the scientific properties of food, be able to scientifically investigate changes to food and solve food production problems.
