Physics

Course summary

Over the two years, students will study topics related to the main areas in Physics, which are designed to prepare students for further study in Physics. These include: Particles and Quantum Phenomena – The fundamental properties of matter, radiation and energy; including an introduction to quantum theory and antimatter. Waves and Optics - The properties and behaviours of waves and an in-depth investigation into the experiments that furthered our understanding of them. Mechanics - The principles and applications of motion and energy beginning with Newton’s Law’s and ending with Einstein’s theory of relativity. These ideas underpin many work related areas, such as engineering, transport and technology. Electricity - The physics behind electricity, circuits and superconductors. Fields - Gravitational fields, electric fields, magnetic fields and how they influence various phenomena; such as motion of the planets and lightning. Nuclear Physics - Types of radiation and radioactive decay, the energy stored in matter and how we can harness it using nuclear fission and fusion.
