Assessment
This two-year course comprises three assessed units. On this course you can choose to specialise in Performance or in Composition, with your preferred option making up 35% of the A Level, and the other component making up 25%. Component 1 – Performance is assessed in a recital with a visiting examiner. The standard of performance expected in your final recital towards the end of the course is Grade 6/7, whichever option you choose. Component 2 – Students compose two- or three-pieces dependent on their specialism. Learners are required to compose a brief set by the exam board as well as completing a free composition. Component 3 – end of course Listening and Appraising examination responding to music from the areas of study and set works. Areas of Study include The Western Classical Tradition, one from Rock and Pop, Musical Theatre, or Jazz, and one from ‘Into the Twentieth Century’ or ‘Into the Twenty-First Century.
