Course summary

The A Level is a blend of theoretical and practical physics. Topics include mechanics, electrical circuits, material, waves, fields, thermodynamics, nuclear radiation, particle physics, oscillations and space. There is a significant mathematical content to the course. Students will work both individually and in groups when problem solving and in their practical work. A Level physics opens up a wealth of opportunities to students. Many move onto study degrees at University or as work based apprenticeships. The fields they go on to study in are very varied including radiotherapy, engineering, finance, teaching and research.

Entry requirements

It is required that candidates have either GCSE Physics at grade 7 or GCSE Combined Trilogy at grade 8-8. It is desired that candidates will also have a grade 7 in Mathematics at GCSE. We would also recommend a student takes A level Mathematics or a minimum of Core Maths as subjects to supplement this course.

How you'll be assessed

Advanced Physics I - Working as a Physicist. 1 hour 45 minutes 30 %. Advanced Physics II - Working as a Physicist. 1 hour 45 minutes 30%. General and Practical Principles in Physics - Conceptual and theoretical understanding of experimental methods that will draw on the understanding of the core practicals. 2 hour 30 minutes 40%. 16 core practicals are conducted throughout the course and lead to a practical endorsement. There are strong links between A Level Physics and Mathematics. Students need to be strong mathematicians even if they are not taking mathematics at A Level.
