Course summary

The A Level German course is divided in to 4 interesting themes and builds on students’ interests: Theme 1 Social issues and trends – the world of work, the environment and the education system in Germany. Theme 2 Artistic Culture – this is set in the context of German speaking countries and communities. This theme covers music, festivals and traditions and political and artistic culture through TV and media. Theme 3 Immigration and Multiculturalism – the contribution of immigration in a multicultural German society, the political and social effects of migration in communities and in political thinking. Theme 4: The Reunification of Germany - this theme covers political culture before and after the events of reunification, political relations between East and West, the fall of the Berlin Wall, Germany since the reunification. We will study a popular text and film to complement the study of these themes.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a grade 6 at GCSE is required.

How you'll be assessed

Paper 1 - 2 hours- 40% of the qualification. Section A: Listening (30 marks). Students will respond to comprehension questions based on a variety of contexts and sources. Section B: Reading (30 marks) A reading assessment based on a variety of text types and genres where students will have to respond to comprehension questions. Section C: Translation into English (20 marks), an unseen passage to be translated from German to English. Paper 2 - 2 hours and 40 minutes- 30% of the qualification. Section A: Translation (20 marks) Students translate an unseen passage from English into German. Section B: Students respond with two essays on either two literary texts or one literary text and one film (50 marks each). Paper 3 - Speaking: About 20 minutes in total - 30% of the qualification. Internally conducted and externally assessed. Total assessment time: between 21 and 23 minutes, which includes a single period of 5 minutes’ formal preparation time. Task 1 draws on vocabulary and structures across all four themes. Task 2 is based on independent research selected and carried out by the student. The research may be based on one of the themes or on the students’ own subject of interest related to the society and culture of the language studied. Students will be assessed on their ability to use a range of language accurately, communicate and interact effectively, summarise and analyse findings from written sources relating to their research subject and show knowledge and understanding about the culture and society where the language is spoken.
